From research presentations to industry visits, our most recent Researchers’ Workshop highlighted the breadth, energy, and ambition of the SynHiSel network.
Thanks to the team at the University of Manchester for hosting our most recent Researchers’ Workshop for two days of presentations, seminars, industry visits, collaboration and networking opportunities.
The workshop opened with a career-focused session from Maria Perez-Page, who shared insights from her own academic journey alongside practical advice on applying for academic fellowships.

Researchers from across the programme presented their latest work, sparking discussion, feedback, and new opportunities for collaboration.

We were delighted to welcome Zachary Smith, Associate Professor at MIT, who delivered a guest seminar titled “Leveraging the PIM Concept for Gas Separation Membranes.” His engaging talk prompted lively discussion and fresh perspectives on membrane design and performance.

Industry links were further strengthened through a visit to the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC). Hosted by Molymem Ltd., the tour offered first-hand insight into 2D coated ceramic membranes, advanced characterisation facilities, and roll-to-roll membrane production.

The programme concluded with an inspiring talk from Sebastian Leaper, CEO and Co-Founder of Watercycle Technologies, who reflected on his transition from PhD researcher to entrepreneur and the importance of bridging academic research with industrial expertise.

Together, the workshop reinforced connections across the network and set the stage for continued collaboration, knowledge sharing, and industry-focused activity in the months ahead.
